Motherwell have today announced on their official website that Stuart McKinstry’s move to Leeds United has finally been completed despite the 16-year-old already working at Thorp Arch for much of the summer.

Leeds’ interest in the midfielder had initially been reported by The Scottish Sun last December shortly after McKinstry had been included on the Well bench for the first time in his career.

It had appeared that McKinstry’s move to Leeds had been finalised, with the youngster appearing in a photo posted by Twitter account Lufcyouth in April showing the 13 players who had signed as scholars.

And yet, there may have been some confusion for fans with neither Leeds or Motherwell confirming McKinstry’s switch to Elland Road. But that has now been cleared up by his now former club.

The Scottish Premiership side have confirmed on their official website that the paperwork has finally been completed and McKinstry is now officially a Leeds player.

The announcement also confirmed that the Championship leaders have agreed a compensation package that could see the overall fee rise depending on his progress at Leeds and whether the Whites sell him on in the future.

McKinstry will surely be looking at breaking into Carlos Corberan’s under-23 side in the coming months. There is a lot of competition to get into that team, but it looks to be a very good place for young players to be.

Marcelo Bielsa has welcomed a number of the club’s prospects into the first-team during his time in charge. And while injuries have often forced his hand, he has been willing to keep faith in them when they have taken their chance. McKinstry may perhaps be setting his sights on becoming one of the next starlets to push themselves onto Bielsa’s radar.
