One first-team regular could soon be leaving White Hart Lane, according to one of the people who knows him best.

The mother of senior Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen has revealed to Belgian radio station Studio Brussel that her son is starting to miss home badly, and suggested that he will leave White Hart Lane sooner rather than later.

Vertonghen has been in North London since leaving Ajax to join Spurs in 2012, and he has racked up close to 200 appearances for the club in four-and-a-half years.

He has been a regular for virtually the entirety of his time at Tottenham, and has made 22 appearances in all competitions already this season.

However, there has been some talk in recent weeks that the 29-year-old could look to return to mainland Europe in the near future as he heads towards the twilight of his career.

His mother, Ria, revealed to Studio Brussel that she hears from her son often and suggested that he could leave England soon as he is beginning to miss home.

Ria Vertonghen said: “Jan is starting to miss home. I hear from him relatively often, around two or three times a week, for sure.

“What? An update? I see him coming back home soon. We’ll see. That [where home is] depends. Home could also mean Amsterdam, I think. His girlfriend is from there. That may well be.”

Amsterdam is certainly a second home to Vertonghen. The Belgian international spent nine years at Ajax from the age of 15 until he left for Spurs in the summer of 2012.
