The agent of Werder Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka insists he’s likely to sign a new contract rather than move to the Premier League, delivering a blow to Burnley and Chelsea while in conversation with NovaSport1.
When one of the oldest and most historic clubs in Germany was relegated from the top flight for the first time in four decades, a summer exodus seemed inevitable.
So far, however, only one player has left – quicksilver winger Milot Rashica joining Norwich City in June.
And whoever said loyalty is dead?
Czech Republic international Pavlenka was reported to be the subject of a £2.7 million bid from Burnley, as reported by BILD, while European champions Chelsea have also been linked with Petr Cech’s 29-year-old compatriot.
But, even with one season left on his contract, Pavlenka is determined to stick around and help Werder bounce back at the first time of asking.
Pavlenka looks likely to turn down Chelsea and Burnley
“Jiri Pavlenka has a valid contract at Bremen, where he is currently preparing for the next season,” says agent Pavel Pillar.
“As for speculation about possible interest from Chelsea, no specific offer has arrived.
“After the season, we declared we would deal with the situation of Jiri Pavlenka. The most likely solution, however, is Pavlenka will sign a new contract in Bremen and continue in Germany.”
Burnley had apparently identified the quietly excellent Pavlenka as a potential replacement for England’s Nick Pope at Turf Moor.
Pope was being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the summer.
But with veteran Frenchman Hugo Lloris now expected to stay in north London, it looks as though Pope will be staying put too with the transfer deadline less than two months away.
