Gareth Bale has joked that finishing above Arsenal was the ‘most important’ thing for Tottenham Hotspur on the club’s official website.
It’s fair to say that both Tottenham and Arsenal didn’t manage to live up to expectations this term.
Spurs did, at least, manage to hold some claim to the local bragging rights though.
Tottenham’s 4-2 win over Leicester City was enough to seal them seventh place and ensure they finished above Arsenal.
And in an interview with the club’s official website, Bale was reminded of that stat.
“That takes us above Arsenal and into seventh,” the interviewer said.
“Which is the most important thing, I guess,” Bale laughed in response.
“It’s been a bit of a disappointing season but nobody can fault us, we always fight to the end no matter how the game is going and we always try to work hard for the fans and give them something to talk about. Getting into Europe is an added bonus.”
Bale’s goals were the reason why Tottenham were able to hold out and finish above Arsenal.

The Welshman scored twice late on to secure Tottenham’s win over Leicester at the King Power Stadium yesterday.
Spurs have now finished above Arsenal for five seasons in a row.
But neither Spurs or Mikel Arteta’s side are likely to be at all happy with how this season has progressed, after very inconsistent campaigns.
