HITC Sport has compiled the most expensive Tottenham Hotspur XI of all-time.
As the transfer window begins to reach top gear, HITC Sport has taken a look back at the most expensive XI that Tottenham have assembled down the years, based on the fees that they could cost Spurs when they arrived at White Hart Lane…
GK: Hugo Lloris
According to BBC Sport, Tottenham signed Hugo Lloris back in 2012 in a deal that could have risen to £11.8 million. Even if they had to ultimately pay all of the add-ons involved in the fee, there is no question that the transfer was an absolute bargain for Spurs.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris
RB: Alan Hutton
BBC Sport confirmed in 2009 that Tottenham had spent around £9 million on signing Rangers full-back Alan Hutton. His spell at White Hart Lane suggested that they significantly overpaid.
CB: Toby Alderweireld
Like Lloris, Spurs landed a huge bargain when they signed Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid. The Guardian reported that Tottenham spent £11.4 million on the defender, and he has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s best at the back.
CB: Younes Kaboul
According to FourFourTwo, Tottenham spent around £9.5 million on re-signing Younes Kaboul from Portsmouth in 2010 just over a year after selling him for £6 million. He briefly served as club captain during his second spell, before leaving for Sunderland in 2015.
Gareth Bale
LB: Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale was signed as a left-back, so assumes the left-back role in this team. He joined for just £10 million from Southampton in 2007, leaving six years later, with BBC Sport reporting that he joined Real Madrid for £85.3 million.
MD: Moussa Sissoko
Tottenham’s decision to spend £30 million, according to BBC Sport, on recently-relegated Moussa Sissoko is still awaiting vindication. It is arguably doubtful that the size of the fee will ever be justified.
Moussa Sissoko
MD: Paulinho
Paulinho joined Tottenham for £17 million in 2013, BBC Sport reported. Like Sissoko, his time with Spurs will not be remembered fondly by the supporters.
MD: Erik Lamela
Tottenham signed Erik Lamela for £25.8 million in 2013, the Guardian reported. He has endured a mixed spell with Spurs, but there are certainly signs that suggest that he can be extremely influential for the team in future.
W: Son Heung-min
The Guardian reported that Spurs spent £22 million on Son Heung-min. After an underwhelming first season, he enjoyed a fantastic campaign last term, scoring 14 times in the Premier League.
David Bentley
W: David Bentley
Tottenham spent £15 million on David Bentley in 2008, BBC Sport reported. Unfortunately, occasional glimpses of quality – that goal against Arsenal springs to mind – were all Spurs really got for their money, and perhaps his most memorable moment for the club was helping throw a bucket of water over Harry Redknapp while celebrating Spurs qualifying for the Champions League.
ST: Roberto Soldado
Had Tottenham spent £26 million on a prolific striker in 2013, perhaps Harry Kane would have needed to wait longer for a prolonged chance in the Spurs first-team. Luckily for Kane – and Spurs fans, in hindsight – Tottenham spent £26 million on Roberto Soldado, BBC Sport reported, and the Spaniard went on to score just seven league goals in 52 games.
