Gary Neville says Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker plays in the second-most difficult position in English football, after Manchester United’s David de Gea, as he told the Overlap.

The Old Trafford legend thinks de Gea plays in the toughest position because of the scrutiny he is under as a Manchester United player and how it is ‘tough’.

Given that Manchester United and Liverpool are the two biggest clubs in English football, then they are going to come under that immense pressure.

Over the years, both de Gea and Alisson have served their respective clubs very well, the former is coming towards the end of his days, whilst the man donning Liverpool’s gloves is still at his peak after turning 30 in October.

Alisson has won everything there is to win on the domestic stage in English football, the same with de Gea, although, that all-important European Cup does allude the Spain star.

Nonetheless, this is what Gary Neville had to say regarding the goalkeeping positions at Manchester United and Liverpool.

“It is a problem that (the focus on Manchester United goalkeepers),” said Neville. “I said it’s the single most difficult position in English football, to be the Manchester United goalkeeper.

“I genuinely believe that. I think Liverpool’s number one is second. That’s not a disrespect to other clubs. I just think the Manchester United goalkeeper comes under more scrutiny, if they make a mistake, than any other position in English football on the pitch. It’s tough.”

ALISSON V DE GEA ON SUNDAY

Liverpool will welcome the buoyant and recent EFL Cup winners Manchester United to Anfield on Sunday for the biggest clash in English football.

The duo have midweek fixtures to deal with before then, but Alisson and de Gea will be in the biggest of spotlights at the weekend.

Everything is leaning towards a Manchester United win because of their current mood, form and the fact that they beat their bitter rivals during the reverse fixture.

But Jurgen Klopp’s men did beat Manchester City on home soil this season, and whilst their troubles will need to be fixed in the summer, they will still pose a huge threat and those old faces can still conjure up some magic.
