Everton have reportedly taken a step closer to hiring former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

The Toffees are in the hunt for a new head coach after Carlo Ancelotti quit at Goodison Park to return to Real Madrid.

According to Sky Sports, Benitez, who won a Champions League title with Liverpool in 2005, is closing in on a return to the Premier League by joining his former club’s Merseyside rivals.

This has divided the Everton fanbase to some extent and Richard Keys has claimed on Twitter that he knows for a fact a lot of Blues will boycott the club.

Results game

Earlier in the week, The Athletic reported that the Goodison Park club’s board was divided on hiring the Spaniard due to his history at Liverpool.

But you get the impression that a lot of resentment will fade if Everton were to continue improving under Benitez.

The early signs were very promising under Ancelotti and the fanbase’ appetite will have been whet for big things to come in the near future.

And if Benitez – who has also managed Chelsea and Newcastle United – can continue to build on the foundations laid by the legendary Italian then maybe, just maybe, the fans will come around.

Football is, after all, a results game and the 61-year-old knows how to win football matches.
