Shakhtar Donetsk take on Roma in the Champions League this evening.
The Champions League continues this evening, and whilst much of the focus will be on Manchester United’s clash with Sevilla, Everton should be paying close attention to the other tie of the night.
Shakhtar Donetsk host Roma at the Donbass Arena tonight, and will be hoping to claim something of a scalp by knocking the Italian side out of the competition to claim a place in the last eight.
Shakhtar have already come through a tough group which featured Manchester City, Napoli and Feyenoord, and will now be looking to follow that up with a strong showing tonight.
Manager Paulo Fonseca has earned plaudits for his work with Shakhtar, having won a domestic treble last season, and he may be under the microscope for Everton this evening.
The Daily Mail recently reported that Everton are eyeing up Fonseca for a summer move to Goodison Park, as they want the Portuguese boss to replace Sam Allardyce having missed out on him back in November.
It remains to be seen whether Everton firm up their interest in Fonseca, or whether the man himself is interested in a move, but Everton fans and majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri should be watching closely tonight.
Fonseca’s 4-2-3-1 – featuring Brazilian-born trio Marlos, Taison and Bernard – has really caught the eye, and he proved his tactical acumen by beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 2-1 in the group stage this season.
Another strong Champions League showing tonight may just convince Moshiri and co that Fonseca is the man to take Everton forward, whilst it’s an ideal chance for Everton fans to see their managerial target in a crunch game, allowing them to make an early impression of the Portuguese boss.
