Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested on The Hard Truth Podcast that the likes Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur both should have signed Ivan Toney this summer.

Toney ultimately moved to Brentford for around £10 million, and he is quickly proving his ability at Championship level – after scoring seven times in his first six games.

Toney appeared to be holding out for a Premier League club at one stage, but the likes of Tottenham or Leeds did not pay up for him.

And MacAnthony has suggested that both those sides made a mistake by not buying him,

“Every Prem team who are out there who could have bought him and didn’t buy him, you are morons,” MacAnthony said.

“Brentford will probably will win the league and if they don’t they’ll sell Ivan for £30 or £40 million.

“He’s ready for the Premier League now, those teams hang your head in shame.

“Particularly the teams who went up, particularly the teams in the bottom ten. I always said he would have been [good] even for Spurs as back-up. But he’s doing fantastic, good for him.”

Both Tottenham and Leeds were never really linked with Toney, despite both sides clearly having an eye on a striker.

Leeds brought in Rodrigo, while Spurs decided to sign Carlos Vinicius.

Both of the pair have been kept in reserve in the main at their clubs so far, but could have important roles to play over the course of the season.

Toney, meanwhile, will hope to continue to score at his current rate – as he is enjoying a hugely prolific 2020, which has seen his reputation soar.
