The new Celtic signing showed off his throw-in technique during his debut appearance.
Bauer was a derby day debutante at Ibrox last Sunday and one of the most apparent things about his initial display was his throw in ability.
He can rake forward a high velocity ball from the touchline, giving the Hoops access to an attacking tactic that has largely been unused previously at the club.
The Austrian has told reporters he did not have time to discuss using it with Neil Lennon and his teammates prior to the fixture, given the nature of his signing, but the international break has given them a chance to talk it through.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “It’s a good asset to have because if you are 1-0 down at the end of a game you can get the defenders into the box and create some chaos.
“During the international break we had time to sit down and catch up and we spoke about the fact I can bring the long throw-in to the table.
“At Celtic we have Nir Bitton, Kris Ajer and Christopher Jullien, so we have some really good height and we can bring them up for throw-ins. Even if they don’t put it straight in they can get a flick on.”
Is this a viable tactic for Celtic?
Lennon has certainly been looking to bring a more direct nature to Celtic’s play, compared to the Brendan Rodgers era, but it’s doubtful this will become a common tactic every time the Hoops win a throw-in close to the opposition’s third.
As Bauer mentions, it could be useful when Lennon’s team are chasing a game or need to find a different way to break down a sturdy defensive door.
The Austrian is more likely to make an impact based on what he can do with the ball at his feet and that will be what counts most of all over the coming weeks and months.
The 27-year-old has a big opportunity to stake a claim for the right-back spot in the Hoops starting eleven.
