Morgan Schneiderlin hasn’t had a great start to the season for Everton.
You can’t single out one Everton player for criticism following their dismal Europa League defeat to Atalanta on Thursday night.
Nobody really covered themselves in much glory, but if any one player looked worse than the others it has to be Morgan Schneiderlin.
The France midfielder, a £24 million signing from Man United in January, looked the worst of a pretty awful bunch in Italy: poor with the ball, poor without it, and the biggest celebration of the night should’ve been when Ronald Koeman took him off on 66 minutes.
By that stage, the game was already long gone.
The former Southampton man was questionable during the corner for the first goal on 27 minutes, before losing possession prior to the third – and killer – goal on 44 minutes.
It was a horror show for Schneiderlin who, worryingly, was also well below his best during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat by Tottenham at Goodison Park.
The Frenchman is, at the moment, nowhere near his best form and Everton fans and players need him to reproduce the type of performances he showed in the second half of last term.
The Toffees spent £150 million this summer, making it clear that Koeman is targeting a Champions League spot, but the Goodison Park side won’t get there unless senior, experienced heads like Schneiderlin bucks up their ideas – and fast.
