The Mail had claimed back in April that Wolves wanted to make a statement by signing Wilshere.
In the end they backed off, allowing him to join West Ham unopposed. A key reason why is emerging.
The progress shown by Wolves teenager Morgan Gibbs-White is showing that Wilshere simply was not needed at Molineux.
The 18-year-old’s recent performances against Tottenham and Chelsea have been top drawer, the sort of displays which once upon a time earmarked Wilshere as England’s brightest talent.
Injuries have derailed Wilshere’s career, and left him trying regain his form and confidence.
Already at West Ham he has spent two months on the sidelines with injury, before recently returning to the side.
At Wolves he would have clouded a busy midfield picture and made it more difficult for Gibbs-White to get his chance.
It looks like Wolves made the right choice for them, to step back and let West Ham take the gamble on Wilshere, and focus on developing their own talent.
