Morecambe fans have heaped praise on Leeds United loanee Alfie McCalmont, after the midfielder laid on an assist against Tottenham on Sunday. The youngster is impressing, on loan at the League One side.

McCalmont, 21, joined League One side Morecambe in the summer on a season-long loan – going a step up after shining in League Two. During 2020-21, he had a hand in 15 goals while with fourth-tier Oldham Athletic.

While his goal involvement has dried up somewhat, Northern Ireland ace McCalmont is still earning praise from his loan side’s supporters. On Sunday, he started against Tottenham – eventually losing 3-1 to Spurs.

But the midfielder and his teammates came close to an upset. Indeed, Morecambe were leading until Harry Winks curled in a delightful free-kick on 74 minutes. McCalmont set up Morecambe’s opener, from a corner.

Eventually, it took Antonio Conte to bring on the big guns and both Harry Kane and Lucas Moura – who came off the bench – netted to win 3-1. McCalmont posted on Twitter after a superb display from the Leeds ace.

Does Morecambe loanee McCalmont have a future at Leeds?

WhoScored highlight just how effective McCalmont was in midfield – alongside ex-Leeds man Toumani Diagouraga. Four tackles, but also two key passes – having an impact in both areas of the pitch.

He has a contract at Leeds until the summer of 2024. So, McCalmont’s long-term future – on paper – is at Elland Road. But is he doing enough to show Marcelo Bielsa that he can have an impact on the first team?

Well, his form at Oldham, and his ability to cope with the step up to League One is impressive. But onlooking Leeds officials will also note how he starred against Spurs. Morecambe fans were delighted with the Leeds star.
