Rangers continue to be linked with St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky but Aberdeen stopper Joe Lewis would be a better addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad, former Ibrox favourite Alex Rae has told the Scottish Sun.
Even Allan ‘Mr Evergreen’ McGregor cannot go on defying Father Time forever.
The Scottish Premiership great will be 39 this time next year and Rangers will have to start looking for a replacement sooner rather than later. Particularly with the benched Wes Foderingham expected to leave Glasgow when his contract expires in the summer.
Rangers have been linked with Hladky, the Czech Republic man who has shone for a struggling St Mirren side, with the Paisley-based ace telling the Scottish Sun that the Ibrox giants had been in touch.
But, if you ask Rae, another Premiership shot-stopper should be in the Gers’ sights too.
“I’m a fan of Vaclav Hladky from St Mirren and he wouldn’t cost a great deal but I’ve gone for Joe Lewis for longevity,” Rae said of the 32-year-old who has shone at Pittodrie since arriving from Cardiff in 2016.
“Hladky has done well this season but I think Lewis has a lot more stature and presence.
“I know he’s signed a new long-term contract with Aberdeen but in terms of a ‘keeper to come in and improve the side he’d be my choice.”
As Rae suggests, Aberdeen are unlikely to let their skipper go anywhere any time soon with Lewis under contract until 2024. Hladky, in contrast, looks all-but certain to bid farewell to St Mirren when his current deal expires in a few weeks’ time.
Lewis may be the better signing but Hladky is the more realistic one.
