AC Milan are the latest team to be rivalling Tottenham Hotspur for Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.

Schalke's midfielder Max Meyer looks on during the German first division Bundesliga football match Schalke 04 vs Hertha Berlin in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, on March 3, 2018.

AC Milan are the latest side to start tracking Schalke’s Max Meyer, according to Italian publication CalcioMercato, with the midfielder out of contract this summer.

The Serie A team are keen to improve their midfield in the close season and view Meyer as the perfect player to do that, even meeting with the 22-year-old’s agency to discuss the prospect of a switch to the San Siro.

Bad news for Spurs?

This could be something of a blow for Tottenham Hotspur, who along with Arsenal and Barcelona were reported by German publication Bild to be the favourites to sign Meyer.

Atletico Madrid also sent scouts to watch the Germany international in action for his club side in a recent 1-0 Bundesliga victory against Hertha Berlin.

It seems that interest in Meyer is really hotting up, which should perhaps come as little surprise when one of the most exciting prospects in German football is available to sign as a free agent.

What may work in Tottenham’s favour when it comes to Milan is their ability to offer Champions League football, with the latter some way off the pace of qualification in the Italian top flight, currently sitting in sixth place.
