Chris Sutton has claimed that Farhad Moshiri possibly wanting Roberto Martinez at Everton is ‘more bonkers’ than appointing Rafa Benitez, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

Everton sacked Benitez on Sunday and now Moshiri is looking for a replacement with talk that Martinez could return to Goodison Park.

The Spanish coach, who has managed Belgium since being sacked by Everton, is currently preparing for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But, as reported by the Guardian, Everton’s proposal for the 48-year-old to share both roles was rejected by the Belgian FA.

Whilst Martinez’s sacking on Merseyside wasn’t as toxic or unwelcome as Benitez’s, he was still booted out, nonetheless.

Given all of that, Sutton can’t understand why the managerless Toffees would turn to him again.

“Moshiri can’t pick Martinez after sacking Benitez,” said Sutton. “He just can’t do it.

“Talking about not reading the room when he picked Benitez. It all ended badly for Martinez before.

“To go back when a lot of Everton fans feel about Martinez, it would be a more bonkers appointment than Benitez, in many respects, wouldn’t it? To go back-to-back?”

The simple question has to be asked, has Martinez improved since Everton sacked him? Probably.

If Belgium find themselves getting knocked out of the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, then questions will be asked of Martinez and whether he has taken the nation backwards.

Not only that, over the years, the Manchester United, Chelsea, PSG, Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid jobs, to name a few, have been available.

Have any of those clubs appointed Martinez? No. Then there are jobs like Tottenham, West Ham, Aston Villa and Arsenal that have also been available.

Once again, they haven’t pushed for Martinez, which probably indicates that he isn’t the elite level of manager Everton should bring in.
