“More bad news”: Reporter shares “significant” update on £20m Tottenham & Newcastle target

Tottenham and Newcastle target James Maddison is yet to play for England at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Leicester No.10 – who the Foxes paid £20m for – worked tirelessly to win over Gareth Southgate and earn a place in the 26-man squad, although his time in Qatar has been a nightmare so far.

Now, there is “more bad news” for Maddison.

Tottenham & Newcastle target struggling

Well, it was Dean Jones who told Give Me Sport that Tottenham want to sign Maddison.

Elsewhere, it was Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports who claimed Newcastle are keen.

Now, however, even a January move could be at risk, with Maddison’s seemingly innocuous injury turning out to be quite serious.

Sky Sports reported live from Qatar earlier today from the England World Cup camp, stating that the 25-year-old has suffered “more bad news” as he remains unable to partake in training.

A reporter for Sky Sports said: “Today’s (session) was very significant, because, more bad news for James Maddison. He wasn’t out there training with the rest of the squad, and that’s at least five out of six sessions where Maddison hasn’t been able to train.”

Now, this is heartbreaking for the attacking midfielder, who is rarely injured for Leicester.

The Coventry-born playmaker has scored seven goals and also provided four assists in 13 Premier League appearances so far this season, and this injury has come at the worst possible time for him.

Tottenham & Newcastle may be pleased

In our view, if Maddison fails to make an appearance at this World Cup, it may actually please Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe.

Interest in the Leicester talisman would have increased significantly if he enjoyed a strong World Cup campaign in Qatar, with giants such as Real Madrid known to snap up the best performers from past tournaments, like Keylor Navas and James Rodriguez.

Therefore, a deal could have become more difficult for Spurs or the Magpies to complete in January, but if Maddison is forced to keep a low profile due to his injury, it could actually help Tottenham or Newcastle.
