Former Barcelona starlet Sergio Gomez admits he’d be open to joining Premier League champions Manchester City in the future, telling Le Soir that he admires Pep Guardiola’s style of play.

As Joao Cancelo slammed a 25-yard piledriver against the foot of Vicente Guaita’s post during Monday’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, a graphic flashed up on the bottom of the Sky Sports feed. A graphic that told you everything you need to know about the life of a full-back under the most influential tactician of the modern game.

Cancelo has mustered 60 shots in the Premier League this season. That was more than any other full-back in the division. 17 more, in fact, than his nearest challenger, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

So no wonder Sergio Gomez has so much admiration for a manager who, right from the very start of his coaching career at Barcelona, has set about revolutionising the role of the previously humble full-back.

Could Man City sign Sergio Gomez?

In all competitions this season, Gomez has produced six goals and a frankly ludicrous 14 assists for an Anderlecht side under the stewardship of former City skipper Vincent Kompany.

“It is always difficult to know what will happen in the future,” says Gomez.

The Spain U21 international started his career at Barca before moving on to Borussia Dortmund and then Belgium.

“What matters to me is to try to reach the best possible level. It will not necessarily be at Barcelona, but maybe elsewhere.

“There are many big clubs in Europe. I repeat; you never know what will happen in the future.

“Look at a boy like David Silva, who played in Spain before he left for Manchester City. This team (City) clearly has a style of play that I like and that matches my style. Both Barca and City are teams I like because of their style.”

Gomez was linked with both Everton and Southampton in January.

And though no move was forthcoming, he won’t stay at Anderlecht for much longer. Especially if Gomez continues to rack up the assists at such a remarkable rate.
