The Benin striker has been earmarked as a potential recruit by the Cottagers.
General View of Craven Cottage
Fulham have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Montpellier striker Steve Mounié.
It had been reported by Winner Sports that Fulham were set to sign Mounié as a £6 million replacement for Ross McCormack – who completed his move to Aston Villa this morning.
However, there has been no movement in the deal and L’Equipe are now reporting the deputy chairman of Montpellier as stating:
“He is a player who is in our thoughts and unless there is an irrefusable offer, we are not sellers.”
They also report that the £6 million offer being mooted is far from what Fulham have actually proposed.
Ross McCormack celebrates after scoring the first goal for Fulham
The report suggests Fulham have bid €5 million (£4.2 million) for the player – an offer that has been rejected.
Mounié spent last season on loan at Nimes in Ligue 2 and scored 11 goals in 32 appearances for the club.
The big striker, who plays international football for Benin, has only played twice for Montpellier but it seems the 21-year-old is now a part of the club’s first-team plans.
Fulham need a new striker after losing both McCormack and Moussa Dembele, who joined Celtic on a free transfer, and Mounié appeared to be a target.
But it seems they might need to look elsewhere.
