Hugo Lloris has been speaking to L’Equipe about life at Tottenham, and he seemed to make a claim about Liverpool and Manchester City during the chat.

What’s the story?

Well, the £7.9m Spurs glovesman was asked, somewhat provocatively, why Tottenham haven’t won anything.

Lloris responded maturely, explaining how the north Londoners have to now play catch up with “monsters” such as Liverpool and Manchester City.

The France international said: “The important thing is to keep this desire to win! Afterwards, football, we win, we lose, but we have to start by giving ourselves chances to do so, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment. But we are in England, we have monsters ahead of us, with more resources than ours. By doing things smartly, we can get closer.”

Some may argue that Lloris is making excuses, but we think he’s just being realistic about the situation.

Spurs do have a mountain to climb to reach the level of Liverpool and Manchester City, as years of managerial changes and a lack of investment have set them back.

However, with Antonio Conte at the helm, and encouraging signings such as Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski, there are signs of positivity.

Tottenham could’ve been among Liverpool and Manchester City

If Conte fails to succeed at Tottenham, supporters will look back at the summer of 2019 with real regret.

Spurs had just lost the Champions League final, but proceeded to make some woeful signings before Daniel Levy made the foolish decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino.

In contrast, when Liverpool lost the Champions League final in 2018, they backed Jürgen Klopp with the signings of Fabinho, Alisson, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Since then, the Reds have become Premier League champions, while also winning the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the League Cup.

Hopefully, Conte can win silverware of his own in N17, and help Spurs supporters to overcome this feeling of a missed opportunity.
