Garry Monk’s confidence at Leeds United is certainly inspiring, but it has definitely come as a bit of a surprise.
After years of being the outsiders looking in, Leeds United are finally back in the hunt for promotion. It’s been a long road back to the top but with the helping hand of manager Garry Monk, they finally appear to be heading in the right direction.
It has not been an easy transition for Monk following his sacking from Swansea City, but whilst some may consider him to be a reserved character that thought process could not be any further from the truth.
Elland Road
In recent weeks Monk has been stating that the best is yet to come from his Leeds side, which is surprising considering just how well they have begun the Championship season. Whether it is a way to boost the confidence of the fans and the players alike remains to be seen, but it is still commendable. The proof is in the pudding as reported by Yorkshire Evening Post.
“I think we are ahead of schedule.” said Monk.
“The group want to get better and they are not happy with winning that game (against Brentford on Saturday) in terms of wanting to get a better performance out of themselves.
“You could hear it in the changing room afterwards so that’s a good sign and all of those things are good signs – it’s the standards that we set and they are the ones that have to adhere to it but they are also the ones that have to set it.
“It’s good to hear them feeling like that and talking like that although three points and a clean sheet is obviously very satisfying as well.”
You would think that a manager in this situation would be playing it down and trying to lower expectations. But Monk’s stance is refreshing considering how many managers tend to give dull answers in the media, and it shows that he’s planning for a long term future at Elland Road.
It may or may not work out for the Englishman, but for now that feeling of confidence is something Leeds fans have not experienced in a long time.
