Leeds United playmaker Pablo Hernandez is being pursued by the Whites’ Championship rivals.
With five goals and seven assists in the Championship this season, Pablo Hernandez has arguably done more than enough to earn a new contract with Leeds with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, according to transfermarkt.
It has not been an easy campaign for Paul Heckingbottom’s men, and it would have arguably been a lot more underwhelming if it was not for the form of the Spaniard, who has provided more assists than any of his teammates this term.
Despite that record, Hernandez is currently set to become a free agent in the summer, and that has alerted former Leeds boss Garry Monk, with the Sunday Mirror (18th March 2018; page 65) reporting that he wants to bring the playmaker to Birmingham City in the summer.
Monk brought Hernandez to Elland Road having previously managed him at Swansea, so the rumours may leave a number of Leeds fans concerned about the speculation despite the Blues’ position in the Championship relegation zone.
Based on their last result, the Blues will not get relegated this season as they thrashed Hull 3-0 at St Andrew’s on Saturday. And if Monk keeps Birmingham in the second tier, Hernandez has every right to find a potential move to Birmingham the more tempting option.
Despite his advancing years, Leeds can surely have little reason not to hand the 32-year-old a new contract, and offering Hernandez fresh terms now may leave the attacking midfielder wondering how prominent a role he is going to play next season.
Meanwhile, Monk appears set to waste little time trying to get Hernandez in this summer, and that desire to get him through the door may be exactly what he is looking for as he considers his future.
If Leeds now put an offer on the table but find that Hernandez wants to move, the Whites can only have themselves to blame.
