Monchi thinks Tottenham signed ‘a great player’ this summer

Sevilla sporting director Monchi likely knows a player when he sees one.

He spearheads the clever recruitment operation at the current Europa League holders, which has helped them compete with richer rivals.

The Spaniard was unable to lure Sergio Reguilon back to Sevilla – where he impressed so much on loan last season – on a permanent basis this summer.

Tottenham signed the left back, who made his debut in the EFL Cup penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea last night, instead and Monchi has been effusive in his praise of Reguilon in the Telegraph.

“He is a great player,” Monchi said. “Last year he was a very, very important footballer.

“I believe that he grew a lot with us, because until he arrived at Sevilla he had not enjoyed continuity at an elite level.

“I don’t know what will happen in England, because it is another footballing context, but he has everything to succeed.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer signings

  1. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

    £15 million; Southampton

  2. Joe Hart

    Free

  3. Matt Doherty

    £13 million; Wolves

  4. Sergio Reguilon

    £25 million; Real Madrid

  5. Gareth Bale

    Loan; Real Madrid

  6. Carlos Vinicius

    Loan; Benfica

  7. Joe Rodon

    £12 million; Swansea

Reguilon impressed last night with his high-tempo approach on a night where Tottenham had to dig in.

The early signs are that he has all the tools to succeed in English football, but time will tell.

Monchi is clearly an admirer, and Manchester United fans will remember how he tormented them in the Europa League semi-finals as well.

Jose Mourinho will need to manage him carefully right now; limiting his gametime until he’s fully fit and adjusted to the demands of English football.

But it looks as if Tottenham have got themselves a good one.
