Roma’s sporting director Monchi insists the only way the club will allow reported Liverpool target Alisson to leave this summer is if he himself comes out of retirement to replace the Brazilian.
Alisson has emerged as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football following a dazzling season for Roma. Real Madrid have also been credited with keen interest in the 27-year-old, whose performances in Italy have helped the Giallorossi secure qualification for next season’s Champions League after reaching the semi-final stages of this year’s competition.
While Loris Karius has firmly taken over as the number one choice in goal at Anfield ahead of Simon Mignolet, persistent links with Alisson claim Jurgen Klopp still sees the Brazilian as an upgrade on his current options.
Roma’s lofty valuation of their goalkeeper however – Corriere dello Sport claimed earlier this year the club would settle for no less than €60m, a new world record for a ‘keeper – has suggested in the past a move will not be easy.
And Monchi, who spent much of his playing career as a backup goalkeeper at Sevilla before revolutionising the club as their director of football, has laughed off the possibility of one of the club’s prized assets leaving this summer.
“Alisson? If he leaves, it is just because I have gone back to being a goalkeeper,” Monchi said with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, Football Italia report. “This is the only way he will leave, but I don’t know if I am ready to play again.”
