Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah stunned Scott Minto with his missed penalty in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat at AFC Bournemouth. He had the chance to draw the Reds’ level this Saturday.

Philip Billing (28’) broke the deadlock on the south coast after Dango Ouattara broke away from Virgil van Dijk. The 20-year-old charged clear of the Liverpool backline after Ibrahima Konate played the winger onside. A simple ball into the area then left Billing clear to score.

Jefferson Lerma had kept Bournemouth level inside six minutes as the midfielder met Van Dijk’s header at a corner. Neto also did well to deny Diogo Jota straight after the forward’s introduction at half-time. Yet Salah wasted Liverpool’s best chance to score with a penalty.

Dango Ouattara proved a menace as Bournemouth beat Liverpool

VAR Tony Harrington sent referee John Brooks to the pitchside monitor after Adam Smith blocked a goal-bound header from Jota with his arm. Yet Salah missed Liverpool’s penalty at Bournemouth as the Egyptian smashed his shot high and wide to the left of Neto’s goal.

Ouattara caused Liverpool problems throughout Bournemouth’s win as Gary O’Neil’s men boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation. The Cherries had entered the weekend bottom of the Premier League table with five wins from 25 games and the worst defensive record.

No top-flight team had conceded more goals than Bournemouth with 51 before Liverpool arrived at Dean Court. Yet the Cherries would shut Jurgen Klopp’s squad out for only their sixth clean sheet this season. Despite the Reds beating Manchester United 7-0 last Sunday.

Liverpool also beat Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield last August with Luis Diaz (3’, 85’), Harvey Elliott (6’), Trent Alexander-Arnold (28’), Roberto Firmino (31’, 62’), Van Dijk (45’), a Chris Mepham own goal (46’) and Fabio Carvalho (80’) scoring before Scott Parker got sacked.

Mohamed Salah stunned Scott Minto with his awful missed penalty

Salah missing Liverpool’s penalty helped ensure Bournemouth held on to a 1-0 lead to win. It was the first penalty he has missed for the Reds in any competition since December 2021 at Leicester City. Kasper Schmeichel saved his attempt as the Foxes won 1-0 that day.

It was also only the fourth penalty that Salah has missed from 28 attempts for Liverpool so far. The 30-year-old had also scored each of his past five since Schmeichel saved his effort at Leicester. His last penalty came in the Champions League against Rangers on October 4.

So, Salah missing from 12 yards at Bournemouth astounded Minto given his penalty record for Liverpool. The 83-cap Egypt ace has also scored 22 goals in all competitions so far this season. His haul includes 11 goals, plus seven assists, over 26 Premier League matches.

“Wow, what a moment,” former Chelsea defender Minto said on talkSPORT (11/3, 13:58). “What a moment in this game. That is a very unusual moment for a player who you would expect to stick the ball in the net.”
