Newcastle United were beaten 1-0 by Burnley last night, and Mohamed Diame struggled to impress.

Mohamed Diame’s terrible performance for Newcastle United against Burnley last night, surely knocks him straight back down the pecking order at St. James’ Park.

Diame was surprisingly selected to start against Burnley yesterday, ahead of Isaac Hayden, but the Senegal international had a torrid time.

Diame failed to have much of an impact on the game, with his passing wayward throughout.

In the end Newcastle slipped to a 1-0 defeat, and Diame must view it as an opportunity missed.

The 30-year-old has been used sparingly this season, with Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Mikel Merino all ahead of him in Benitez’s selection order.

And Diame’s performance last night will have done little to convince the Spanish manager that he should be handing the former West Ham and Hull man more opportunities.

Diame now looks set to return to Newcastle’s substitutes’ bench, and it could be a long time before he is trusted to start again.
