Mohamed Diame has explained to The Chronicle why he joined Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Diame moved to Championship club Newcastle from Premier League outfit Hull City in August.

The 29-year-old was an important player for the Tigers in the Championship last season.

The Senegal international midfielder helped Hull get promoted from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.

Diame’s decision to leave Hull for Newcastle in the summer transfer window may have come as a surprise to some.

The former West Ham United midfielder has explained his reason for making the switch to the Magpies.

“To be honest, everyone close to me knows I was desperate to play in the Premier League,” Diame told The Chronicle. “To achieve this with Hull was a massive thing for me.

“But when Rafa Benitez called me, I had to think about it. This is what I did. I had to think about where I want to be in two or three years. I took this decision, and I think I made the right choice.”

Diame has made three appearances in the Championship for Newcastle so far this season, creating three chances in the process.

Rafael Benitez’s side are one of the favourites to finish in the top two of the Championship this season.

The Magpies are fourth in the league table at the moment with nine points from five matches, four points behind leaders Huddersfield Town.

Newcastle will face Derby County away from home at the iPro Stadium in the Championship on Saturday evening.
