What were the big stories from that month?
1st January
Manchester United ran out comfortable winners over Wigan Athletic. A brace from Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie did the trick.
2nd January
Two young strikers left the club. Josh King signed for Blackburn Rovers for £1 million while Angelo Henriquez joined Wigan on loan.
3rd January
Tottenham signed Zeki Fryers, to the anger of United. They snapped him up from Standard Liege after just six months in Belgium – believed to be a ploy to avoid hefty compensation fees.
5th January
United took West Ham to an FA Cup replay thanks to a RVP goal in the last minute making it 2-2 at Upton Park.
6th January
United were being linked with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender in a £15 million deal.
8th January
Robbie Brady left the club. He joined Hull City for an undisclosed fee, on a three-and-a-half year deal.
United were said to be interested in signing Frank Lampard from Chelsea.
9th January
Davide Petrucci and Scott Wootton joined Peterborough United on loan.
13th January
United beat old foe Liverpool in the Premier League. Goals from RVP and Nemanja Vidic did the trick at Old Trafford.
16th January
United went through to the FA Cup fourth round. Wayne Rooney scored the solitary goal as they outdid West Ham at Old Trafford.
17th January
Darren Fletcher was ruled out for the rest of the season. He had bowel surgery in an attempt to solve his ulcerative colitis. As a consequence he was ruled out for the rest of the season.
19th January
Wilfried Zaha’s proposed move from Crystal Palace was aid to be on the brink of collapse.
20th January
Clint Dempsey scored an injury time equaliser at White Hart Lane to hold off United in a 1-1 draw.
22nd January
United snapped up young stopper Dean Santangelo from Reading.
23rd January
United were said to be looking at goalkeeper replacements for David de Gea.
24th January
Zaha travelled to United for a medical at the club – after United and Palace finally agreed on a transfer fee.
25th January
Manchester United signed Wilfried Zaha for a deal that could rise to £15 million. He was immediately loaned back to The Eagles for the rest of the season.
26th January
Manchester United marched into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 win over Fulham. Goals from Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Hernandez (2) were enough for victory.
29th January
United became the first football team to be valued at over $3 billion.
30th January
Rooney bagged a brace as United beat Southampton 2-1 – in a game Fergie admitted they were lucky to win.
31st January
Sir Alex denied claims Darren Fletcher could retire from the game.
