As the Bayern Munich and Germany forward announces his plans to flirt with foreign offers at some point in the future, would Manchester City fans be willing to let Edin Dzeko return to the Bundesliga in return for the 2010 World Cup golden boot winner?
Thomas Muller is one of the most under-rated players across Europe. This season has been particulary proficient for the young German international. Toward the end of the last campaign Muller was reportedly unhappy at the Bavarian club he had called home for 12 years as he spent more and more time arriving into games from the substitute bench.
This year however he has bagged five goals in 10 appearances for Bayern, form that has not gone unnoticed after Jupp Heynckes singled out the tireless forward for his performances so far this campaign.
He first shone to prominence of course during his successful 2010 World Cup antics. His five goals and three assists saw him named the tournament’s golden boot winner while also claiming the award of best young player ahead of André Ayew of Ghana. He did all this wearing the number 13, a legendary number for Die Mannschaaft given the past of Michael Ballack and Thomas’s namesake, Der Bomber himself, Gerd Muller.
This level of success has not gone unnoticed across the globe with the obvious links to various clubs that comes with success on an international scale. However Thomas Muller has always been insistent of his desire to remain with Bayern, until now.
While he remains happy at this moment in time at the Allianz his contract runs out in 2015 and he has admitted he would not shun an opportunity to move away:
“It’s still a fact that I will not close my eyes to good offers from the outside.’’
So where could he go?
Well this summer rumours persisted that Manchester City were the front-runners in any race to sign him, potentially adding Edin Dzeko to soften the blow. Muller seems like a Mancini player when you consider it, and at 23 he has plenty of scope to improve. Tireless, fast and hard working without being delightfully skilful his solid technical skills would see him thrive in the Premier League. Chelsea and Manchester United have also both been rumoured to have a long standing interest in the German international.
Interest also comes from the continent where Italian sides Internazionale and Juventus are very keen on his signature, even at the £20 million or so being quoted for his industrious services.
Muller’s adaptability and positional variety will certainly appeal to City fans and the sacrifice of Dzeko, a more out-an-out centre forward type could be an interesting prospect if it meant the German international arriving at The Etihad.
