Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, QPR, West Ham, Sunderland, Swansea, Southampton and Norwich players were put forward by Match of the Day’s pundits, what do you think?
Match of the Day Three announced their own version of an English team made of entirely of uncapped individuals. Do you agree or disagree with their choices?
BBC Match of the Day Three (yes there is a third version now) selected their team of players currently uncapped by England at international level being unveiled this weekend. Recently the likes of Leon Osman and Kevin Davies a couple of years back have received what were perceived as long overdue first caps for the national side so it is a healthy debate. While the likes of Steve Bruce, for all his excellent work with Manchester United never received a cap for England and could not play for Ireland, like his son Alex has, due to rules on ‘foreign’ players in the Premier League at the time.
So it does happen, great players slip through the net but having a look at the team put together by Mark Lawrenson, Dion Dublin and Colin Murray you can potentially hazard a guess why these players haven’t been capped just yet.
GK: Steve Harper – Newcastle United
DF: Kyle Naughton – Tottenham Hotspur
DF: Danny Simpson – Newcastle United
DF: Mike Williamson – Newcastle United
DF: Anton Ferdinand – QPR
MF: Kevin Nolan – West Ham United
MF: Craig Gardner – Sunderland
MF: Matthew Taylor – West Ham United
MF: Wayne Routledge – Swansea City
ST: Rickie Lambert – Southampton
ST: Grant Holt – Norwich City
While you can argue a case for both strikers considering their goalscoring pedigree and the likes of Nolan, Routledge and Naughton based on current form surely the likes of Anton Ferdinand, Matty Taylor and Mike Williamson are just not international class.
So we figured we could open the floor to you guys to let us know…
Who would feature in your England ‘uncapped XI’?
