I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 8th August 2013, but a year earlier.
What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th August 2012 …
Van Moura-son – ‘Days Like This’
Lucas Moura joined Paris Saint-Germain after a protracted transfer battle between the French club and Manchester United.
Just days earlier it had been reported that Manchester United were ready to complete a medical for the player.
Instead PSG concluded a deal that would see him join up with the club from Sao Paulo in January.
That wasn’t the only problem for Manchester United on this day a year ago. Sir Alex Ferguson made the admission that a deal to sign Robin Van Persie from Arsenal had stalled:
“I don’t have a gut feeling about it. We can’t get a breakthrough with Arsenal.”
Of course we all know how the story ends. Nine days later RVP became a United player.
Agger-vation at Liverpool
Brendan Rodgers revealed that the club would be willing to sell central defender Daniel Agger for the right price.
Manchester City were interested in the Danish defender and Rodgers admitted that ‘every player has his price’.
Fast forward 12 months and Barcelona are said to be keen in the defender – but Liverpool certainly seem more reluctant to let him go in the wake of Jamie Carragher’s retirement.
You Arfing a laugh
Some of the more quirky stories from that day now – starting at Newcastle United, where Hatem Ben Arfa was talking up his sides chances of a title-fight.
The Frenchman was clearly an optimist – as The Toon ended up finishing 16th just five points off of relegation – and a whopping 48 points off the top spot.
Goal Hibbert-nation ends
Tony Hibbert scored his first, and so far, only goal for Everton – in his own testimonial. The Toffees stalwart scored a free-kick against AEK Athens at Goodison Park that sparked a pitch invasion.
It was also revealed that Wayne Rooney wanted to play in the game and that the now Manchester United striker would want to finish his career at Goodison.
