Should Arsene Wenger invest £7.5 million in the proven Newcastle United striker in order to get the goals currently lacking at The Emirates?
After yet another impotent display from Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend there is growing apprehension that once again this season could end trophy-less for Arsene Wenger’s men. The great feats Wenger has achieved at the club and the obvious admiration he has for all his players and fans leaves talk of him being replaced by Harry Redknapp or Pep Guardiola redundant. Like Sir Alex at Manchester United it would appear the only time Wenger will leave his current station is if he opts to walk the plank voluntarily.
January however must be a month of activity for The Gunners if they are to win any silverware this season. First of all Andre Santos must go. Antonio Valencia made him look like a pub player at Old Trafford, and that is being harsh on pub players. Then there are the abject attacking options on offer. Olivier Giroud seems talented enough but he is still getting to know the English game, throwing his shirt into the crowd at the Madejski last week shows how much he still doesn’t know about English football. Podolski blows hot and cold, Arshavin and Walcott are technically out of a job in the summer and Chamakh, despite scoring twice against Reading, was still out-staged by Jason Roberts for the majority of the game.
So what Arsenal need is a cost efficient striker with proven pedigree in the Premier League?
Demba Ba anyone?
I am interested to find out what Arsenal fans think of this potential deal.
Fernando Llorente and Klaas Jan Huntelaar have been linked previously although would not be popular options, a misrepresentation of their major attributes in British media is much to blame for these apparent ‘target men’. A massive money move for a star that shines bright such as Falcao, Benzema or Higuain is many fans preferred option but if we come back to reality it is clear Arsenal will not spend £30-odd-million on one player.
So surely the Newcastle United striker moving to The Emirates is a no-brainer. His contract situation at St James has always been a worry and again he has a measly £7.5million buy-out-clause installed in his deal. £7.5million in this day-and-age for a 27-year-old striker who has scored 30 goals in 56 appearances in English football is not a gamble, it isn’t even a bargain it is practically daylight robbery.
A Francophone he would easily be instructed by the similarly linguistic Arsene Wenger and being provided by Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Gervinho and co there is simply no doubt that Ba would score goals in North London.
Will he genuinely want to leave Newcastle is another question entirely. In a recent interview where he opened up about all things in football and life he said:
‘I am happy at Newcastle and I am with a group of players who are very nice and it is good. There is a good core of people. Our captain is very good as a man and player and we have the Newcastle legend Shola Ameobi. He is our big brother.’
But surely Arsenal should try and convince him otherwise in January.
