Joel Campbell scored his first goal on loan at Olympiakos yesterday.
As a number of Arsenal’s young and fringe players took on West Brom in the Capital One Cup yesterday, another Arsenal player who would fit both categories was also in cup action – but in Greece.
Arsenal sent Costa Rican forward Joel Campbell out to perennial Greek powerhouse Olympiakos this season – after a similarly effective deal with Real Betis last term.
The 21-year-old was supposed to return to Betis this summer – but a disagreement on how much the Seville-based club would pay for his services left Arsenal cold, who then renegotiated with the Greek champions.

Yesterday Olympiakos were in action in the Greek Cup against Greek second tier outfit Fokikos (don’t snigger) who have a striker called Randy (stop it) and the home side were fully expected to win the game comfortably – which they did, 5-1.
And it was Campbell who got the ball rolling, scoring in the fourth minute – a goal that was his first for his current club. He scrambled the ball home after a six-yard box melee, in what was admittedly probably not the best goal he has ever scored – but they all count don’t they?
Campbell started the season in the club’s starting line-up, but has more recently found himself on the bench – so a goal will hopefully help him push on and claim back a spot in the starting XI.
But at least he is off the mark.
