Gary Mackay-Steven has told BBC Sport that Neil Lennon’s Celtic will be worthy champions ahead of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers this season.

Rangers are as many as 13 points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic in second place in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment.

The Gers have a game in hand as well, and there are also two Old Firm derbies left to be played this season.

The Scottish Premiership is suspended at the moment due to the global health crisis, and it remains to be seen if and when the season gets back underway.

Former Celtic winger Mackay-Steven, who now plays for New York City in Major League Soccer, has given his take on the title controversy in the Scottish top flight.

Mackay-Steven said on BBC Sport, as transcribed by The Scottish Sun: “Obviously in an ideal world you would like to play it to a conclusion to know every club’s true position. But going back to Celtic they will be worthy champions when the time comes as well.”

What to do with the season?

It is really hard to see the Scottish Premiership resume anytime soon, especially as the divisions below the top flight have been called off.

It is a really tricky situation, as Rangers will feel that they can still catch their bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic if the season resumes.

However, the longer the current uncertainty over this season drags on, the worse it will get for football in Scotland in 2020-21.
