Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has told talkSPORT that he thinks Newcastle are just as big as Everton and Arsenal – and believes the Joelinton move proves Mike Ashley will reinvest.

Newcastle are having a turbulent summer, as a takeover has seemingly fallen apart, leaving Ashley to remain in charge of the Magpies for the foreseeable future.

Boss Rafael Benitez has gone, replaced by boyhood Newcastle fan Steve Bruce in an unpopular move, whilst Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez has moved on.

Fans are furious with the direction of the club, planning demonstrations against Ashley for the opening day of the season against Arsenal.

Now, Fulham hitman Mitrovic – who Newcastle sold for £30million last summer (The Guardian) – has offered his view on the Magpies and their current situation.

Mitrovic firstly suggested that owner Ashley is a ‘good guy’, and believes that the huge club-record deal for new striker Joelinton proves that he will reinvest and continue to make ‘good deals’ for the club.

Mitrovic added that he will always be a Newcastle fan, and feels they have a big future ahead of them, feeling they’re as big as Everton or Arsenal.

“Ashley is a good guy, I understand why people at Newcastle don’t like him but I had a good relationship with him. He was good to me,” said Mitrovic. “I didn’t see him a lot, but he’s a great guy. I think he will invest, he just bought [Joelinton] for £40million, he is just a little more careful than the other owners. He has done some good deals for Newcastle.”

“I will always love Newcastle and I will always be a Newcastle fan. I had a great time there. It’s a great place, a really big club and I think the fans deserve more. I think in the future they will get more and be where they should be. I think they’re as big as Everton and Arsenal, they have a big history,” he added.

That’s the kind of level Newcastle fans are hoping to be at, challenging for European football again with real ambitions of growth – but under Ashley, that doesn’t look likely, not matter what Mitrovic says.
