Stan Collymore has written in CaughtOffSide that Cody Gakpo has been a wrong signing for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
The former Liverpool striker believes that the Reds should have signed a midfielder instead of Gakpo in the January transfer window.
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners brought in Gakpo from PSV last month.
The 23-year-old cost Liverpool £35 million in transfer fees (Sky Sports) and is earning £120,000 per week as salary (Football Insider).
Stan Collymore on Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo
Collymore wrote: “Liverpool are now tasked with trying to compete for the same calibre of player without being able to offer as much, in terms of money.
“It’s very, very hard and although I agree that some of Klopp’s recruitment decisions haven’t paid off, such as bringing in Cody Gakpo from PSV in favour of a new midfielder, every manager makes mistakes, but look at all the ones he did turn into world beaters – Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil Van Dijk and Andy Robertson are just some who have benefited from the German’s vision.”

Staying patient
In our view, Liverpool fans should stay patient about Cody Gakpo.
Yes, midfield is an area where the Reds need(ed) to address, but Gakpo is a very talented and promising young forward who can be a star for the Merseyside club for years to come.
After all, the Netherlands international is only 23 now.
True, Gakpo has not been able to make a massive impact at Liverpool so far, but we have to give him time and afford him patience.
We should properly judge the youngster next season.
The forward has not scored or given an assist in three Premier League matches for Liverpool so far.
Gakpo has also made three appearances in the FA Cup for the Reds.
