Gabby Agbonlahor has voiced his shock at the fact Manchester United failed to snap up Kieran Trippier. The full-back has just signed for Newcastle United.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Aston Villa striker criticised United’s reluctance to pursue the England international further.
The Red Devils have been tracking the full-back for some time and approached Atletico Madrid for his signature last summer.
Nothing came to fruition between the clubs, however, meaning Trippier got to soak up the Spanish sun for a while longer.
That was until Newcastle agreed a deal with Atletico this week to bring the 31-year-old back to the Premier League for £12 million (Sky Sports).
St James’ Park may not be filled with the warm air of the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium but it will provide a familiar feeling for a player who has visited the Toon Army’s ground on many occasions.
Trippier should add extra quality to Eddie Howe’s squad as they look to beat the relegation bun fight.
Wan-Bissaka woes
Ralf Rangnick could certainly benefit from the right-back’s presence in his own camp.
United’s dismal 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday was void of class or composure. A major theme throughout the evening at Old Trafford was the home side’s ineptitude at delivering balls into the box.
One of the main culprits was Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose performance left a lot to be desired.
“When I watch Manchester United, (Cristiano) Ronaldo must be so frustrated from the right-hand side. I love Wan-Bissaka defensively – but he can’t cross a ball,” said Agbonlahor.

“There was an incident where he tapped the ball with his left foot and fell over and crossed it out of play.
“He’s just not good enough for Manchester United’s service.”
Rangnick missing Trippier
Agbonlahor continued: “I don’t understand, why have Manchester United let Trippier go to Newcastle? He would be perfect for Manchester United.
“Put him on the right-hand side. Imagine how many goals Ronaldo and (Edinson) Cavani would get from that service.
“Wan-Bissaka is not a modern-day full-back, especially not in a modern-day team. So, for me, Manchester United have missed a trick with Trippier.”

It’s unlikely United will look to strengthen this area of their squad in January, with outgoings seemingly the main priority this window.
The likes of Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are all in the mix to move this month.
However, if Trippier proves a hit at Newcastle, Rangnick may rue the fact his employers didn’t snap up the England man when they had a chance.
