Paul Merson has suggested in The Daily Star that Aston Villa should have made a move for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.

The former Villa star believes that Abraham would have been a good signing for Dean Smith’s side in the summer transfer window.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that Villa should have waited, and instead of signing Ollie Watkins, they should have gone for Abraham.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Aston Villa have missed a trick. If they had waited before spending all that money on Ollie Watkins, they could have got Tammy Abraham. Spending £28m for a player who has never kicked a ball in the Premier League is a lot of money. It’s a gamble.

“He scored a lot of goals last season but I like to see what players do when the pressure’s on, and at the back end of the season, I didn’t see too much. If they had waited until after Timo Werner had made his debut for Chelsea, they probably could have got Abraham for free for the season.

“I don’t see how Tammy Abraham plays now for Chelsea. Timo Werner has got that position sewn up. And he’s played for Villa before. He ticks the boxes.”

Tammy Abraham to Aston Villa?

Abraham spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Villa from Chelsea, and scored 26 goals and provided three assists in the Championship, according to WhoScored.

The England international was a regular for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea last season, as he scored 15 goals and provided three assists in the Premier League and scored three goals and provided one assist in the Champions League, according to WhoScored.

Abraham has established himself as an important player for Chelsea, and even though the Blues have signed Timo Werner in the summer transfer window, the 22-year-old will feel confident of competing for a place in the team.

It was always unlikely that Abraham would return to Villa after a successful season on a personal level for Chelsea in 2019-20.
