Boyhood Aston Villa fan Gabby Agbonlahor left the club in 2018, with his fellow boyhood fan, Jack Grealish taking the reigns last season and guiding the club to promotion in May.

Gabby Agbonlahor has stated on Instagram that he misses Aston Villa after Jack Grealish called him ‘the kind of derby day’ on what is his birthday.

Former striker Agbonlahor is celebrating his 33rd birthday on Sunday, with Grealish also stating on Instagram that his fellow academy product will ‘always’ be a ‘Villa legend’.

After Steve Bruce guided Villa to the Championship play-off final in 2018, Agbonlahor was released by the club, with Villa going on to lose that Wembley showdown against Fulham.

He has since retired from the game, as Agbonlahor and Grealish exchanged these messages with one another from their personal Instagram accounts.

Grealish and Agbonlahor messages

Whilst Agbonlahor would have been disappointed with Villa losing that play-off final under Bruce just before he left, he would have been delighted to see Grealish guide the club back to the promised land in May.

Dean Smith was in the dugout as Villa made a return to the Premier League, with Grealish’s return from injury in March resulting in the club going on a 10-game winning run.

During one of those games, Grealish scored against Birmingham at St Andrew’s to score both home and away against Villa’s bitter neighbours.

Grealish took inspiration from Agbonlahor and his goalscoring days against the Blues, with Villa now in the Premier League, and preparing for a clash against Brighton which will take place after the international break.
