West Ham United received criticism for the manner in which their last home game was allowed to turn into nothing short of a farce.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan spoke exclusively to talkSPORT, and criticised West Ham for the manner in which they have supervised games at the London Stadium this season.
The Hammers have endured a miserable campaign thus far, and currently sit precariously in 17th spot in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the drop zone.
Frustrations boiled over during their 3-0 home defeat to Burnley 11 days ago, with multiple pitch invasions disrupting the game, and tarnishing what was already a dreadful afternoon for the east London outfit.
Khan condemned the behaviour of the West Ham fans, when speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, but insisted that it is the club’s responsibility to ensure that there is better stewardship during games at the London Stadium in the future:
“I understand the concerns of many West Ham fans. They are very unhappy about events in the recent past. What you can’t condone is behaviour we saw during the Burnley game. Those who run West Ham have got to get a grip and, working with the stadium operators, make sure this sort of behaviour doesn’t continue. It is West Ham’s responsibility to make sure there is proper behaviour from their fans.”
The Hammers face a crucial home game against Southampton when they return to action on March 31st, and with matches against Chelsea and Arsenal to come in the weeks that follow, nothing less than a win against the Saints will do.
Following Khan’s comments today, though, it will not be just West Ham’s performance that is under intense scrutiny next week.
