Huddersfield Town handed a first Premier League start to Scott Malone at the weekend… and it did not end well.
Malone has struggled to make an impact at Huddersfield since making his summer move from Fulham – and last week ClubCall reported he could be in line for a loan move to Leeds United.
Manager David Wagner showed his faith in Malone on Saturday, selecting him in the starting line up against Swansea City.
Unfortunately it was not a successful first start for the 26-year-old, as Swansea went on to win the game 2-0 through two Tammy Abraham strikes.
Malone was substituted after 80 minutes, meanwhile taking some flak on Twitter for his performance…
Malone had only started one game previously for Huddersfield, in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace.
He was always going to find it a little tough to go straight in, and could offer nothing going forward from left-back – and was the only Huddersfield player including the goalkeeper to complete fewer than 70 per cent of his passes.
Still, Malone featuring from the start should send a message to any interested suitors that he is not a player Huddersfield are considering getting rid of, with David Wagner perhaps trying to nip the Leeds rumours in the bud.
He will need to play better, but Huddersfield can hardly afford to start loaning out players who can provide valuable squad depth who will be needed over the course of the season.
