Samir Nasri is overjoyed with Manchester City’s “massive win” against Everton on Saturday.
Miracles do happen, at least for Samir Nasri.
Last week the Manchester City midfielder admitted that it was nothing less than “a miracle” that they were in pole position to win the Premier League. With three more games to play, they would win the title if they picked up maximum points in each.
With Liverpool losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield last Sunday and City getting the better of Crystal Palace by the same scoreline away from home just two hours later, Manuel Pellegrini’s side had wrestled back the control of the league from Brendan Rodger’s team.
On Saturday, Everton were supposed to give City a stern test. Roberto Martinez’s players needed to win at Goodison Park to retain their dim hopes of finishing fourth in the league and had a truly great home record.
And indeed the Toffees surged ahead after just 11 minutes when Ross Barkley scored a sensational goal with a 25-yard curling effort that left Joe Hart with no chance of making a save whatsoever.
However, City staged a comeback thereafter and eventually wrapped up the points with a 3-2 win, lifting themselves level on 80 points with Liverpool. Chelsea are two points behind the duo in third, with all three teams having played 36 games each.
As things stand, City will clinch the league if they win their final two matches, as they have a better goal difference than Liverpool. With games against Aston Villa and West Ham United to come both at home, the Citizens are now the firm favourites to pick up the title for the first time since 2012.
Nasri is understandably overjoyed with the fact that City have retaken the control of the championship race and believes that it was a “great team performance” that saw them overcome Everton.
As Nasri says, it was indeed a “massive” win. Everton were said to be the last realistic tough game for City, and now that they have collected all three points from it, the Manchester outfit look set for a cruise ride in their final two matches.
