Tottenham Hotspur shouldn’t be worried about Man City’s interest in Matthijs de Ligt.
It looks like Tottenham Hotspur could face competition for Matthijs de Ligt – and it’s serious competition.
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester City have joined the race to sign the Tottenham target and Ajax centre-back, who is valued at around £50 million [Daily Mail].
However, De Ligt is now among Mino Raiola’s star-studded stable of clients and the Italian agent’s relationship – or lack of relationship – with City boss Pep Guardiola shouldn’t be forgotten.
It was only March when Raiola called the Premier League-winning manager a “coward” and a “dog” for comments about Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The pair have been at loggerheads since 2010 for issues relating to Ibrahimovic’s stint at Barcelona under the Spaniard, and The Independent suggested earlier this year that Raiola would “send his players to other clubs rather than see the Manchester City boss benefit from their services.”
If that has any truth whatsoever then it seems unlikely that he will negotiate with City over De Ligt and therefore Tottenham, on the face of it, may have a fantastic chance of signing the 18-year-old.
Not only that, but Spurs, who have previously signed Davinson Sanchez and Christian Eriksen from Ajax, have a good relationship with the Eredivisie giants..
City might be interested, but that doesn’t at all mean that Tottenham shouldn’t be very optimistic about their chances of beating Guardiola to his signature.
