Sunderland fans know only too well that selling your star striker during the January transfer window is a surefire way to derail a promising season.

The tortured Black Cats were flying high in League One before 16-goal Josh Maja departed for Bordeaux in winter 2019.

Two years on, Sunderland are still mired in the weeds and nettles of England’s third tier, the luscious green grass of the big time a fading memory.

So Hibernian would do well to keep that in mind as the Wearside giants come calling for young Kevin Nisbet.

The Sun reports Sunderland have made an enquiry about one of the most exciting young forwards in Scotland and, as it stands, are currently leading the chase for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Rising interest in the Glasgow-born poacher will come as no surprise to Hibs boss and former Sunderland coach Jack Ross (Record).

With 12 goals in 25 games, Nisbet has adapted strikingly well to life in the Premiership after a summer transfer from Dunfermline.

His form has lifted Hibernian to fourth, within touching distance of third-place Aberdeen.

But if you assumed Hibs fans were fretting about the potential departure of their rising star, think again.

There is an acceptance, deep down, that Nisbet will be on his way out of Easter Road eventually if he continues to find the net at such a prolific rate.

But there’s an overiding feeling he could do better than a club mired in the mediocrity of England’s third tier.

Here’s what some Hibs fans had to say about the situation on Twitter:
