Luke Steele played just two Championship games for Nottingham Forest before leaving the City Ground for Millwall.

Luke Steele has admitted to News at Den that Nottingham Forest gave him no choice but to seal a move away from the City Ground this summer with the goalkeeper eventually joining Millwall on loan.

An experienced shot-stopper only signed a two-year deal with Forest in August 2018 but, just 12 months later, he was on his way to London.

Steele made just seven appearances in all competitions for the two-time European champions and his chances of first-team football decreased further when Forest signed not one but two new goalkeepers in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Aro Muric arrived on a temporary deal from Manchester City while the burly Brice Samba has signed from Caen, leaving Steele well down the pecking order. And, in fairness to the 34-year-old, he wasn’t just going to sit around alongside Daryl Murphy, Liam Bridcutt and co in Sabri Lamouchi’s ‘bomb squad’.

“It wasn’t working out for me this season at Forest with them bringing a goalkeeper on loan from Man City and signing a French keeper. That was it for me,” the former Manchester United trainee said.

“I had to decide I needed to get out even if it was for the short term. When (the move to Millwall) came about it was a good opportunity.”

Life at The Den hasn’t exactly given Steele access to a place in the starting XI, however. The 34-year-old is yet to make his league debut at Millwall with Bartosz Bialkowski currently ahead of him in Neil Harris’s pecking order.

But at least he’s second choice at Millwall rather than third or fourth at Nottingham Forest.
