Sheffield Wednesday were beaten at Millwall in the Championship on Tuesday.

Jon Newsome has blamed Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat at Millwall on Tuesday on Jos Luhukay’s unconventional team selection.

Wednesday lined up without a recognised striker at the Den, but took the lead with three minutes left of the first half courtesy of Joey Pelupessy’s first goal for the club he joined in January.

However, Millwall levelled seven minutes after the restart through Lee Gregory – a lifelong Sheffield United supporter – and completed the turnaround when Steve Morison struck 11 minutes after that.

Wednesday ended the game with Lucas Joao, Atdhe Nuhiu and Jack Stobbs in attack, but it was too little too late for the visitors, who were unable to capitalise despite the 13 minutes that were added on for a head injury to Jordan Thorniley.

And Newsome told BBC Radio Sheffield afterwards: “You pick a side like the manager’s picked and the formation that they have and if it works it’s great.

“But Pelupessy’s goal glossed over it the first half. I just don’t see how you’re going to go away and win football matches playing in a formation like that and playing with an idea of let’s keep the ball in and around our penalty area and in our half of the pitch and occasionally try to play through them.

“It’s lovely, it’s great, but is it winning football? I don’t think so.

“You’re continuously inviting them onto you aren’t you? You want to play the game in your opponents’ half as much as you can. You want to play in the final third as much as you can. You want to continuously ask their defence questions, test the keeper, test how good they are with your attacking ability. We don’t do that. We haven’t done that this evening.

“We played in our half the majority of the time, we had no outlet ball. We can’t put our foot through it because we know as soon as we do we’re in trouble – it’s going to come straight back at us.

“I just don’t understand the tactics and I don’t understand how we’re going to win games.”

Sheffield Wednesday remain 16th in the Championship, following Queens Park Rangers’ defeat at Bramall Lane and Nottingham Forest’s draw against Reading.
