Danny Mills has hit out at the decision by Paul Tierney to give Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes a red card. He sent the Brazilian off in their Carabao Cup tie with Southampton.
The Magpies beat the Saints 2-1 on the night to secure a 3-1 win on aggregate and a place in the final. Joelinton settled their first-leg at St Mary’s before a brace from Sean Longstaff was the difference at St James’ Park. The Toon will now play their first cup final since 1999.
But Newcastle’s night was not perfect in the second-leg as referee Tierney sent Guimaraes off in the 82nd minute. The official initially gave the midfielder a yellow card but upgraded it to a red following the review by his VAR of the 25-year-old’s challenge on Samuel Edozie.

Guimaraes did not appear to make a deliberate foul to hurt Edozie but planted his foot on the 20-year-old’s ankle. The winger had managed to nick the ball away before the Brazilian could commit to any tackle. In Edozie doing so, Guimaraes’ tackle was late and dangerous.
Tierney reviewed Guimaraes’ tackle on Southampton gem Edozie before issuing a red card to the Newcastle star. The referee felt the challenge was reckless after planting his studs in the forward’s ankle and bending his leg. Tierney felt Guimaraes endangered his opponent.

Tierney leaves Mills fuming after showing Newcastle star Guimaraes a red card
Guimaraes will now serve a three-match ban after his red card against Southampton. But the Newcastle star will not be suspended for the Carabao Cup final on February 26. He will miss their Premier League games with West Ham United, AFC Bournemouth and Liverpool.
Mills, though, does not believe Tierney should have shown Guimaraes a red card for the Newcastle star’s foul on Southampton gem Edozie. The former England right-back instead believes the official overacted as the challenge was not a deliberate act to hurt the winger.
“It was unintentional,” Mills said on talkSPORT (31/01, 21:43) as Tierney reviewed the foul by Guimaraes. “If this is given as a red, it’s a disgrace. He’s not out of control. It’s pathetic.”
