The appointment of Steve Bruce as manager and subsequent January signings brought renewed optimism to Villa Park. However the proceeding matches quickly burst the bubble, proving that simply signing the best players from other clubs does not guarantee success.
At such a tricky time, the importance of certain Villa players should not be under stated, with Mile Jedinak particularly important while those ahead of him get used to each other.
Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury looked out of sorts against Newcastle but expecting a new central midfield partnership to immediately tick is unrealistic.
Jedinak’s return – after five games out – was hoped to be the catalyst that would get Villa back to winning ways, and while that did not happen the Australian international still did a relatively good job shielding the back four.
In time he will get back to his best, allowing the players ahead of him to shine, and patience is vital when so many new faces are thrown into the mix.
The problem for Villa is that they do not have as much time as they would hope. However Jedinak could yet be the key to getting the best out of Bruce’s recent additions.
