Mikel Merino has already become a key player for Newcastle United.

Merino started for Newcastle against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday, and helped his side pick up a 2-2 draw.
The midfielder had been out for a few weeks, after picking up a back injury.
And although Merino isn’t fully fit yet, he says he is prepared to play through the pain barrier for Newcastle.
“My fitness is improving,” Merino said.

“I’m not at 100% yet, but I’m here to help the team. It doesn’t matter if I’m a little bit injured or 100% good, I’ll still give everything I can on the pitch.”
The fact Rafael Benitez has picked Merino despite the Spaniard not being fully fit shows just how important the youngster already is to the Magpies.

Merino only joined Newcastle from Borussia Dortmund during the summer transfer window, but his showings have immediately made him a key player at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle will need Merino to be in fine form at the weekend, if they are to get anything from their match against Chelsea.
The Magpies have not won any of their last five league matches, and travel to Stamford Bridge as the heavy outsiders to get the three points.
