Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino not fazed by takeover talk at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle are currently up for sale, and it appears that Amanda Staveley is edging closer to agreeing a deal with Mike Ashley to buy the club.
Newcastle are expected to have more money to spend if they are taken over by Staveley, and that should enable them to compete for honours in the Premier League.
But Merino insists that he is not letting the excitement of the potential takeover impact on his performances.
“Personally I don’t think much about the takeover, I don’t know what my team-mates think,” the Spanish midfielder said.
“We just have to focus on football because other things can distract you. We can’t worry about other things.”
Merino joined Newcastle during the summer transfer window, and he has immediately impressed at St. James’ Park.
The 21-year-old’s loan move from Borussia Dortmund has already been made permanent, with Newcastle acting quickly to snap up the midfielder.
Merino scored Newcastle’s winner in their most recent fixture, as Rafael Benitez’s side overcame the challenge of Crystal Palace.
Newcastle have made an impressive start to their campaign, and currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League table.
